About the Authors

John Henry Merryman (1920-2015)
John Henry Merryman, Sweitzer Professor of Law, Emeritus at Stanford Law School, founded the field now known as Art Law. Professor Merryman first taught Art Law at Stanford in the early 1970s and wrote widely on artist's rights and cultural property issues as well as comparative law. He and art historian Albert E. Elsen authored the first edition of Law, Ethics, and the Visual Arts in 1979.

Stephen K. Urice
Stephen K. Urice is Professor of Law at the University of Miami School of Law. A former archaeologist and attorney, he earned a Ph.D. in art history and a J.D. at Harvard University. He writes and lectures internationally on art, museum, and cultural property law. Before teaching full-time, Professor Urice practiced trusts and estates and exempt organizations law and was the director of Philadelphia's Rosenbach Museum & Library and directed the national culture program at the Pew Charitable Trusts.
Simon J. Frankel
Simon J. Frankel is a Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco, and a lecturer at Stanford Law School, where he teaches Art and the Law. He has spoken and published widely on issues concerning art and law and previously served as a commissioner on the San Francisco Arts Commission. Before becoming a judge, he practiced law in San Francisco for 28 years, handling numerous landmark cases in the areas of copyright, trademark, art, and cultural property law.
